The term "xeriscaping" was coined by the Denver Colorado Water
Department in 1981. A compound of the Greek xeros, dry, and
"-scape," as in landscape, "xeriscape" landscaping refers to
creating a landscape design that is drought resistant. Over the
past couple of decades, it has been adapted to mean something as
simple as grouping together plants with similar water needs to
reducing the overall size of the traditional lawn by adding
extended patios as well as using ground coverings, scrubs and
mulch in lieu of grass which can be a water guzzler, especially if
you want it to stay green in hot dry climates.
In planing a xeriscape, you need to focus on plants native to your
own area that are drought tolerant. The drought-tolerant
designation refers to AFTER they are established in the ground.
Any new plant in the landscape needs a period of time to get
settled. Keep them watered at least for the first season. Then you
can turn them over to nature's watering schedule.
You can depend on quality and service from Mike's Plants. |
